Our Annual Homeless Benefit for the Wayside Cross Mission was started years ago by Richard Tanner of the Rumor Hazit Band. PSMA took it over 6 years ago after Rich said he just couldn't do it anymore. This event has grown every year and all the bands and performers have a blast playing for such a good cause! We have recruited the help from both the Wal Mart Store's now, along with many other Local Businesses to make this event a truly great one that raised over four thousand dollars last year to help the Homeless People of Pueblo. The sound, lighting & backline consisting of guitar and bass amps along with a full set of drums is all provided by Rapid Electronics for the bands to use. All the food has been provided by the Side Pocket. In 2004, we moved the Benefit to the Highest State who provided the food. All the door prizes are provided by our great sponsoring businesses of this event. Ray Bolte of Rapid Electronics has been the Host for the event ever since PSMA started hosting it, but has taken on the help of a Co-Host the last couple of years because he's just to busy with the stage and sound chores. This years Co-Host will be Hudson Jack again helping out with running the show along with many other volunteers that help with the door, the drawings and the food. The 2004 show will feature 14 different bands, seven per night. See the 2003 & 2004 schedule's and articles below!

The PSMA 4th Annual Homeless Benefit for the Wayside Cross Gospel Rescue Mission! Feb.  21& 22, 2003!
(From the PSMA March/April, 2003 Newsletter)
Another year and another Benefit for the Homeless at the Side Pocket, yep here we go again! I'm determined to make it go better than last year, I have my  new Carvin SL24 mixing board and a third half stack for the shows back line now. The new board makes my job much easier doing the sound and I ran across a deal on a Mark 4 Boogie half stack that I could not pass up! Very Cool Amp! Aaron Sandoval from the Matrix Band loaned us his Hartke full stack Bass rig for the show, Thanks Aaron! Next thing I know, I have bands coming out of the woodwork that want to play this Benefit! Tony Wright from KDZA offers to advertise it for free on three different radio stations, Fantastic! Both the Wal-Mart Super Centers offer again to do the $1,000.00 matching funds and throw in $ 125.00 for door prizes as well, Way cool! Thanks to my sister, Karen Ward for putting the Wal-Mart thing together for us again this year, Thanks Sis! Things are looking good already! I'm getting a lot of help from the PSMA board on collecting door prizes, which was one of my beefs last year, and Hudson Jack steps up to be the co-host again this year with Gale taking care of the door prize drawings. Thanks Hudson & Gale! A little over a week before the Benefit at the February PSMA Board meeting, I find out there's a new Reverend at the Wayside Cross Mission, Rev. Thomas Bond is retiring, so I go down and have a talk with the new Reverend Jim Carmack, and make sure everything is ok with him on doing the Benefit? Could have been a major problem, but Jim had heard about the Benefit and was very enthusiastic and couldn't wait to talk to me about it! Come to find out, he's a guitar playing musician as well and said he would make an appearance at the Benefit to thank everyone! Totally Awesome! A week before the Benefit, High Wired cancels for the last slot on Friday and Full Circle Band fills the slot, I still have three more bands on standby that want to play! We do the stage set-up on Wednesday night before the show and all goes really smooth, we got the kick drum working real good, better than ever before with some new equipment and a little tweaking here and there. The whole week leading up to the show, no one cancels, how weird? Somebody always cancels right before the show! Friday afternoon, doing final preps to the stage and Rich Robling comes in and tunes up the drums, Thanks Rich! Still nobody cancels for the show, very strange? This has never happened before, so I'm thinking there will be some no shows instead? Stupid Me!
Show time on Friday, Frankie and Juls are there ready to go, Peter Burg and my sister are working the door and Hudson and Gale are not here yet! The show must go on, so I get up do the little speech thing and start the show! Frankie & Juls did a great job as usual. Hudson & Gale finally show up and Richie Tanner & the New Rumor Hazit Band takes to the stage and they rocked the place getting everybody fired up for things to come! By this time I have the PA sounding pretty darn good with a little help from Donovan McNeilly. Next up is Josette with the Hit & Run Band with some country and blues songs that really got the crowd going! Josette has a great voice! Reverend Jim Carmack shows up and makes a short speech about the Wayside Cross and thanks everybody for their efforts! Next up was the United We Stand Band and the first song they did was our National Anthem done by Danny Guida on the lead Guitar, very cool! They continued to rock the house with some older and newer classic tunes , they even did a Pink Floyd song for me, Thanks Guys! By this time, we have the PA sounding really good and the Boogie was definitely the hit amp on the stage! Next up, was a crowd favorite, the 2nd Street Revue Band and they did an excellent job with the wide variety of songs they do and Donovan’s Guitar playing antics! The next band up was Straight Up with a mix of covers and originals tunes, and the final band was Full Circle that rocked the house again with some killer guitar work and good selection of classic rock & roll songs. We collected over a grand between the door & tips tonight and stayed on time, with every band showing up to play and no equipment failures! A very good night, I was real happy with lots of compliments on the sound! One more night to go! Steve Parke, our PSMA Treasurer was freaking out on all the money we raised, he's never worked a Benefit like this before!
Saturday afternoon, I show up about 3 PM to get the stage ready to go and the pool players had moved the whole speaker stack over and crunched all the monitors together, pinching the speaker wires and damaged one of the jacks on one monitor, I'm livid to say the least!! They have all these tables, but decide to move my speaker stacks to use a table next to them. Extremely inconsiderate and self centered!
I move the speaker stacks back and move the wire to the other good jack on the one monitor and check the monitors and they are working amazingly! We start the show at 6 PM with Rich & Dave doing a great job as usual! Next up is the Blue Pepper Band and they rocked the house, Excellent Band! During the performance the monitors went out on stage right and had to be replaced before the next band, luckily I had spares, so it only took a few minutes with some help. The next band up was Aaron Evan's new band called The Element with his girlfriend on bass and sister on drums, performing all original material and they did an tremendous job! Next, Reverend Jim shows up and does another speech. The next band up was Matrix, playing classic rock & roll tunes followed by another crowd favorite, Jargon and they rocked the house with some classic rock and original tunes! Up next, is the original Rumor Hazit band that started the Homeless Benefit years ago and they only get back together for this Benefit! Needless to say, they were the crowd favorite and they rocked the house as usual in a loud way! The last band for the night is a local Rock & Roll favorite in town that goes by the name “Faded.” A Most Excellent Band! What a fantastic turn out both nights for the Benefit! I was happily surprised! We raised over two grand for both nights and it was the smoothest running PSMA Benefit ever! Everything went on time with zero no show bands. This is how it's suppose to be! A big Thanks to all our Sponsors and the people that worked the show. Thanks to The Side Pocket for the Hospitality and the Food, WalMart, #842 & #1001 and most of all,
A Big Thank You to all the bands that played!

PSMA 5th Annual Homeless Benefit for The Wayside Cross Gospel Rescue Mission!
February 20th & 21st, 2004

Another year and here we go again! This time with a new location at The Highest State, the new home of the PSMA Galleries! The new location makes it much easier for me as far as moving all the equipment, because I'm the house sound man there and all I had to do was lug all my backline up the stairs, but I had lots of help with that! Things this year started out pretty much the same with a few bands calling me up several months before the show to make sure they could play at the 2004 benefit. I took care of the paperwork with the Walmarts matching funds in early January, thanks to the help of my sister Karen Ward at the #842 WalMart North Super Center. Also, the WalMarts kicked in a $125.00 worth of gift certificates for door prizes which worked out very nicely by taking some of the pressure off the rest of us in the job of obtaining enough door prizes for the event. The Benefit was pretty much all booked up with bands by the end of January and everything was a go with The Highest State providing the food, security, etc. We had one band cancel two weeks before the show, which was no problem and was filled by one of the five bands I had on standby. I always have more bands that want to play than there are available slots, and that just shows how much this event has grown over the years! I want to apologize to the bands that didn't play this year, but I will try my best to get them in there next year! By show time, we are all set up on stage and sound checked with three half stack guitar amps, my trusty Carvin Cyclops bass amp and my 5 piece drum kit ready to rock! We have all the workers lined up and scheduled, more than enough door prizes and Hudson Jack to help me again as Co-Host for the show with his wife Gale Rynhart taking care of the drawings as usual. I think we have all the bases covered?  Ok....... Here we go!
The show started out rather slow on Friday with the first band, there was not much of a happy hour crowd there, but the Knowclue Band did an excellent job of performing some cover and original tunes and started getting everybody in the place excited of things to come. Everything in pro- sound land is working as planned, I just hope my Mesa Boogie hangs in there this time! By the time The Blue Pepper Band gets up to play more people start arriving for the show. Blue Pepper is one of my favorite dance bands and they did a fantastic job with popular cover dance tunes and actually got a few people to dance for the first time in the night! The next band up was our Co-Host's band, yup, it was time for Hudson Jack & The Medicine Men and they did a great job of covering Hudson's originals from his newly released CD with special guest Kenny Nickolson setting in on electric guitar!
Up next is Rev. Jim Carmack from the Wayside Cross Mission to say thanks to everybody involved and to say some words about The Wayside Cross Mission and the accomplishments they have made over the past year with the mission going from housing 6 men average to 32 men and 20 women! Fantastic job Jim, keep up the good work! All of us here in PSMA are very grateful to be able to help you with your job of helping the Homeless People of Pueblo!
It's about nine now and the place is really starting to fill up with people and the next band up is Shavano who basically replaced the Southern Comfort Band when Charlie Davis decided to retire, featuring John Gerlock on guitar and vocals with Jim Shafer on fiddle, keyboards and vocals. They rocked the place and did an excellent job getting the crowd going with popular country and rock & roll tunes. Yeah, they evan did a Big Cat Band song as well by popular demand! The next band up was the Silver Eagle Band who mixed it up with country and rock & roll tunes as well and they had the place rocking with the lead guitar playing antic's of Gerald Trujillo! Everything still working OK in pro-sound land, no problems so far with lots of compliments on the sound! So far so good! Next band up is the one and only King Slender, fresh out the recording studio recording their new CD with Bryan Dehn on the seven string electric guitar. The rocked the place to the pleasure of many people who just showed up to see them perform again! Thanks guys for packing the house for us! They did a Fantastic Job! I was so busy mixing them, I didn't have time to snap a picture, sorry about that guys. The last band for the night was another favorite classic rock band of mine who go by the name of The Full Circle Band! They rocked the packed house with many popular classic rock tunes from Stevie Ray to Pink Floyd in their usual most excellent form! One night down and one to go, all the equipment is hanging in there with zero problems and zero no show bands! Yeah, this is how it's suppose to go, I'm pumped and ready for tomorrow night!
I got there early on Saturday to find a nagging feedback problem that popped up previously and a few times last night that I thought was being caused by the vocal effects. Turns out it was 1.6K in the mains EQ, notched it out and the problem is gone! Just one of those quirks in this room with all the hard surfaces. Show time is getting close and the room is filling up with people early today, turns out many have come to see the first band performing tonight which is Rev. Jim Carmack's band "Heartbeat."  After a short sound check to get them all dialed in on monitors, the show began on time! The band consisted of two guitars, keyboards, bass player, drummer and a lead female vocalists. They started out the show with some classic rock & roll songs including a Pink Floyd tune much to my surprise and continued to mix it up with some christian songs they perform at church and more rock & roll songs. They did a very good job considering they just put this band together for this show! The next band up is The Pseudo U Band, a three piece band performing all of their original alternative/modern rock songs and they did a really good job! Next band up features our PSMA Vice President, Shae Dunton and her husband Eric in their band that goes by the name of Jargon! They did a fantastic job mixing it up with covers and originals with Shae on keyboards and lead vocals! It's nine now and everything in pro-sound land is working just peachy with lots of compliments on the sound. By the way, I should mention that I have been recording every band playing this weekend on CDR and giving them the CD after their performance for demo material or at least a learning tool to hear their performance to make changes or improvements, just as a bonus for playing this benefit. The next band up is a crowd favorite and one of mine also that goes by the name of The 2nd Street Revue Band. I've mixed these guys so many times, I had them dialed in no time at all! They put on a fantastic performance mixing it up with covers and a few originals including the theme song from 007! Next band up features the guy that started the whole Musical Homeless Benefit thing back years ago, yeah, I'm talking about Richard Tanner and his Rumor Hazit Band! They took to the stage and rocked the place in their usual fashion performing many classic rock & roll songs with lots of fog on the stage just for effects! Next up is the Jet Fox Band, another band put together just for this show featuring some well known musicians from Pueblo. The Band includes Danny Guida and Odie Pedraza on guitars, Carla Rael on bass, Duane Vigil on drums and Deana Valdez on lead vocals. Needless to say, they put on an excellent performance in a classic rock & roll fashion! The last band for the night is the Blues Bullies, a true blues band featuring some of Pueblo's best seasoned musicians that perform cover and original blues material featuring some songs from their recently released CD. They put on an awesome performance much to the pleasure of the crowd that have never heard them play before! They are regulars in the big blues events all over Colorado, but don't get a chance to play much here at home in Pueblo. The Blues Bullies, without a doubt, get my vote as the best band this weekend for the benefit! It was a real pleasure to get a great band like these guys to close out our 5th Annual Homeless Benefit!
As with any benefit there are always a few snags that happen and we really only had one major problem that came in the form of the bar owners of the Highest State saying we had to stop collecting at the main door at 10 PM both nights and only collect from people going upstairs where the bands are playing after we had agreed on charging at the main door all the time both nights! Their reasoning is their late night young crowd would not pay the cover charge to get in and they rely on that crowd to pay their rent, it's their two busiest nights. After investigating this further in the days after the benefit, I found this truly was the case and it was a wise decision on their part, but a bad decision for us to have a benefit there and bad management on their part for not telling me about this problem with their young late night crowd and agreeing to our terms in the first place! To make things right with us they have promised to make a considerable donation to the Wayside Cross to make up for some of the money we lost at the door. All in all, the benefit went very well other than the previously mentioned problem with zero equipment failures and zero no show bands. We did end up raising $1197.00 at the door for both nights and made the minimum of a thousand for the WalMarts to match us, so that means we raised over three thousand dollars total for the Wayside Cross Gospel Rescue Mission! Not to bad at all! Oh Yeah, my Mesa Boogie worked perfect both nights, I think I have finally got that thing working correctly, YEAH!
Finally I would like to thank all the bands that performed along with all the people that worked the show and all the sponsors that donated door prizes!  We could not have pulled it off without you! It was a lot of work and I'm glad it's over......... I need the rest!
Till Next Year........

The 2005 Homeless Benefit started out with some question marks whether it was even going to happen because of the Irish Pub being sold early in February. After talking to the new owner of the Pub at the January PSMA board meeting, it was decided to find another home for PSMA and the Homeless Benefit. So the day after, I was on the phone talking to Tom Emerson of the Side Pocket about possibly having it there again where it all started years ago. Tom was excited about it and we decided on a date to fit his schedule with all the big pool tournaments he has going on there! With a date and a place to put it on I began to start booking bands for the show and put all the paperwork together for the Wal-Mart matching funds with my sister Karen Ward. Karen has been instrumental in making the matching funds with both Wal-Mart Super Centers happen from the beginning. Thanks again Sis!
Two weeks before the show I finally have it all booked up with bands including the Wayside Cross Gospel Mission's own Rev. Jim Carmack's band called "Heartbeat" for the second year in a row! The Wal-Mart Super Centers also kicked in a $120.00 in gift certificates for door prizes, which really helped out a bunch in obtaining enough door prizes for the benefit. The Wednesday night before the show we began the huge job of setting up the stage, lights and sound equipment for the big show. With the help of Doug Matuzak and Bob Villalon it went a little faster than usual but still took about seven hours to set everything up. Thanks for the help Doug & Bob!
On Friday, the first day of the Benefit at 3 PM, I'm there at the Side Pocket setting up the drums that were used the night before at Open Mic at our new PSMA home at LaLuna. Everything is going along to plan as usual and I get a call from Bob of the Road Crew Band saying that they can't play on Saturday in the 8 to 9 slot that they were booked for! Here we go again, so while we are sound checking the drums and everything else before the show starts, I'm on the cel phone trying to find a band to fill the empty slot on Saturday. I'm not rattled at all; I'm kind of use to this last minute cancellation thing and leave messages with several bands that came to mind. The show starts on time with our first band SOA that did a mixture of original and cover tunes in a hard rock kind of way and did a very good job! I pretty much have the sound all dialed in by the end of their set and the next band Rumor Hazit takes to the stage. Richard Tanner of the Rumor Hazit band is the guy that started the Homeless Benefit many years ago! The Rumor Hazit Band rocked the place in their usual high-energy fashion with classic rock & roll tunes and did an excellent job! Rich also made a little speech about the Homeless Benefit and thanked PSMA for keeping it going and thanked all the bands for playing as well. Right On Rich! The next act up is Rev. Jim Carmack's Band, Heartbeat! Much to the delight of the early crowd that came to support the benefit and see this band perform! The Heartbeat Band mixed it up with classic rock & roll tunes and a few Christian songs that they play at church which were very good. They did a fantastic job and Rev. Jim made a speech thanking everybody for all their efforts in helping him help the Homeless people of the Pueblo area, saying that we are still the biggest single contributor to The Wayside Cross Gospel Mission every year! During the band break, I get a call from Sam of the Blackout Band saying they would bail me out and play the empty 8 to 9 slot on Saturday! Great, problem solved! Thanks Sam! Next band up is one of Pueblo's hottest classic rock dance bands, that goes by the name of The Blue Pepper Band! They took to the stage and got the dance floor cooking with the first dancers of the night and did a most excellent job as usual! During the Blue Pepper Band performance the first glitch of the night happens with the 15" speaker in my Carvin Cyclops bass amp going out. So we put more bass in the monitors to get through their set and sent Rick Black and Donovan McNeilly to LaLuna to grab Donovan's Fender bass amp to replace it. While the next band Pseudo U is setting up on stage, the replacement bass amp arrives and we replace my ailing cyclops bass amp with it. Pseudo U put on a good show with their high energy all original hard rock tunes! The next band up is one of my personal favorites that made a big name for themselves playing at a little bar on the south side of town called Hoch's Lounge. Yeah, I'm talking about the Big Cat Band! They rocked the house in their normal fashion playing some of their original tunes and cover tunes much to the crowds delight and even had everybody singing along to one of their original tunes called "I have a hairbrush in my ass!" Just one of the unforgettable moments that happen at these benefits every year! It was funny.... You had to be there! The last band of the night goes by the name of "A Poor Substitute," a very popular punk band in the Pueblo area that attracted many of their followers for their performance tonight! They rocked the house in a big way with their all-original tunes complete with a mosh pit on the dance floor provided by their fans! A Poor Substitute is a very talented band and they did a great job for the closing band on Friday! The first night went very well except with the bass amp problem, which we were able to remedy very quickly. There were lots of complements on the sound from the benefit patrons and players along with the bar management. We collected $860.00 at the door, and had a very good crowd all night until the last band, not to bad at all! One night down and one to go, I'm tired, but ready for round two tomorrow!
Saturday, day 2, Donovan and I are at our shop, Rapid Electronics in the afternoon and pull the speaker out of my bass amp and discover one of the two wires from the terminal to the actual cone of the speaker broke right in the middle, how weird, the voice coil is OK. We were able to repair it and put it back in the amp. I arrive at the Side Pocket about 4 PM and swap out   bass amps back to my Cyclops bass amp again. Hopefully it will get us through round two? The show starts on time with the Family Juls Band and they did a fantastic job mixing it up with original and cover tunes! The next band up is a most excellent rock & roll band and a long time supporter of the Homeless Benefit that goes by the name of "Faded." These guys took to the stage and righteously rocked the house, much to the delight of the crowd! Next up is the Blackout Band, they did a great job with Jackie Cesar on lead vocals doing a fantastic job with classic female singer rock & roll tunes. During the end of the Blackout performance the 15" speaker went out again in my bass amp, I'm really getting miffed with that speaker now and we swapped it out with our backup bass amp again before the next band. The next band up is the only country/rock band on the line up that goes by the name of the Silver Eagle Band. Silver Eagle rocked the house with rock and country tunes and really did a great job much to the delight of the crowd that was dancing it up on the dance floor! The next band up is the one and only 2nd Street Revue Band, another local favorite variety band and a long time supporter of the Homeless Benefit as well! They mixed it up with original and cover tunes, with Bryan Richie setting in on harmonica and lead vocals. 2nd Street Revue did a wonderful job playing a wide variety of songs and the only band on the weekend band list that had an accordion, piloted by Dave Gouge. Next band up is a first timer at one of our benefits and they go by the name of Blue Monday! The first band all weekend that had a saxophone, trumpet, keyboard, two bass guitars and no guitars whatsoever! Very unusual, but it sounded great and they did a fantastic job mixing it up with original and cover tunes! The last act for the night and this years benefit is the Jet Fox Band! The band is put together every year just for this benefit! The band consists of Danny Guida and Odie Pedraza on guitars, Carla Rael on Bass and Duane Vigil on drums and this benefit all of their wives joined in on the fun as backup vocals and they really did a great job! They mixed it up with cover and original material with Odie doing the majority of the lead vocals.
All in all, the Benefit was a huge success with very little problems, there are always a few, it never fails! I was very happy with the sound all weekend long and so was everybody else, which is a real good thing! I must be doing something right! We ended up raising $1463.45 at the door for both nights! Not too shabby at all, and we made over the minimum $1,000.00 for both the Wal-Marts to match us at a grand apiece. So that means the Wayside Cross Gospel Mission will receive more than we did last year, which was my personal goal, of around $3463.00! Not to bad for two nights work! A big thanks goes out to Tom Emerson and the Side Pocket crew for hosting the show and providing the food. A huge thanks to both the Pueblo Wal-Mart Super Centers and all the other sponsors that consisted of Rapid Electronics, Pueblo Wintronic Co., Axe Haven Music, Marck Time Music, Elledge Music, Reininger Music, Country Kitchen, Mexi-Deli, Cactus Flower, Goomba’s and the Do Drop Inn. Also, I would like to thank all the people who worked the show that consisted of Donovan McNeilly, Peter Burg, Elvin Martinez, Rick Black, Bill Blackburn, Dave Gouge, Danny Guida, Doug Matuzak, Bob Villalon and Karen Ward & Sarah Gallow from the two Pueblo Wal-Marts. Finally, I can’t thank all the bands enough, because without you, none of this would be possible!

7th Annual PSMA Homeless Benefit
February 17th & 18th, 2006

The seventh year of this great benefit, I can’t believe it’s been that long….. And it’s now one year longer than the original founder of this benefit who was Richard Tanner of the Rumor Hazit Band who did it for six years starting in the early 1990’s, before PSMA came along and picked it up and ran with it to keep this fantastic benefit alive for a very worthy cause! You can bet Richard was there playing with his band and helping however he could. Another big plus this year was all the help we received from both the Wal-Mart Super Center employee’s helping with the front door and door prize drawing duties. The reason behind the extra help this year is Wal-Mart has a new program if they have a 5% or more employee participation for any charitable cause, they will kick in another $500.00 from each store. Well to make a long story short, they pulled it off, earning another $500 dollars from each store which means each Wal-Mart Super Center donated $1500.00 rather the normal $1000.00 as they have in the past. So when you add these figures together with what we raised for the two day benefit of  $1633.50 gives us a grand total of $4633.50 for the Wayside Cross Gospel Mission, which happens to be a new record amount raised!  So a big THANK YOU goes out to the Pueblo Wal-Mart Super Centers and their employees for helping us so much for a good cause!! Also, a special huge Thank You to my sister Karen Ward who put this whole thing together with the Wal-Marts in the first place and who was instrumental in getting us the extra help and door prizes as well from both the Wal-Marts. Thanks Sis!

This years benefit started out with a little bit of a new twist. First of all, we had it at a new place again to host it, which was the Famous Saddle Saloon & Hot Rod Café where Chuck, Dorothy and the rest of the crew were just fantastic cooking up some great food and supportive in anyway they could and providing excellent service to all the patrons and musicians that attended. Secondly, the new board of PSMA was very helpful in helping me by booking all the bands, collecting the majority of the door prizes and organizing work schedules for the event. This alone took a big burden off my shoulders and let me concentrate more on the technical end of the event. Thanks Guys!!!

Day one, Friday started out with no glitches after 4 hours of set-up and sound checks on the stage. The first band up was a local favorite that goes by the name of The Full Circle Band who rocked the house in their normal Classic Rock and Blues fashion and got the house crowd riled up for things to come. The next band was very special that goes by the name of the Heartbeat Band which has a member by the name of Rev. Jim Carmack playing acoustic guitar who runs the Wayside Cross Gospel Rescue Mission and has done a fantastic job of building up the mission to house more men and women than ever before. The Heartbeat Band stuck more to the country music side of things seeing as how we were playing in a well know country bar with a few rock & roll songs thrown in for good measure, and they really did an excellent job! The third band for the night, called Larry T. & The Country Gold also stuck to the country music side of things playing acoustic guitars and a mandolin, where Larry played some of his original songs and some good old classic country cover songs as well. The next band up went from one extreme to the other, as going from country to punk! This band goes by the name of Pseudo U, which is a well know punk band here in Pueblo that has always gladly played at all of our benefits. They rocked the house in a big way with all their own original songs much to pleasure of the majority of the crowd present with a few groans from some of the older folks. The next band up was a reunion of a high school band that goes by the name of Felony. What a great name for a band, and what a fantastic job they did with classic Rock & Roll songs. They had the whole house rocking and really enjoying what they were hearing. I was pleasantly surprised myself at how good these guys were with very little practice before this gig and how long they have been apart. They nailed these songs with zero glitches! Very good band, I was dancing behind the sound board on the U2 song! Next band up was another classic Rock & Roll band that goes by the name of Sporadic Consistency. They did a very good job rocking the house in a big way and was the only band all weekend that did a Pink Floyd song much to the pleasure of this soundman, who is a major fan of Pink Floyd. Thanks Guys!! The last band for the night was Sixteen 61, who did a most excellent job of mixing it up with classic Rock & Roll and Blues cover songs. Everybody in the whole bar was really digging this band. A very good band to close out the night!
All in all, everything went very smooth for day one with zero equipment failures and lots of compliments on the sound along with plenty of help working the door and drawings. Also, of special note, some people from the new Guitar Center here in Pueblo showed up and set up a small booth giving away stickers and other goodies to who ever wanted them. One day down and one long one to go….
Day two started out at 2 PM in the afternoon with the student bands, that was such a successful addition to our last Adopt A Music Student Benefit in October last year, we have decided to keep it going with this Benefit. The first band up goes by the name of A New Beginning. They did a good job with the three our four songs that they knew which were all cover songs if I remember correctly? After a short break we got the next band on the stage that goes by the name of AHW, (Don’t ask what it stands for.) who did a very good job of mostly all original songs with a few covers thrown in for giggles. These guys are in High School and played with confidence and attitude like they have been playing together for years. Very talented young men, I was impressed.  Next band up was called Becoming Equal, and they had a message as a Christian punk band, getting the word out in their musical way, which was very good in a loud kinda punk way, I guess you could say. The last of the student bands was called Mach 1, they played our last benefit in October, and even did a better job this time with some new alternative songs and some classic rock & rolls songs as well.
Next band up was a Pueblo favorite that plays at all the Festive Fridays and B Street Bashes, that goes by the name of The Martini Shot Band! They rocked the house in their usual fashion with originals and classic cover songs much to the delight of everybody that was there. The real only technical problem we had all weekend was when the Shot got up to play, I was informed that the kick drum attack head was ripped on the first layer with the second layer still intact and the drum was still functional. So, the Martini Shot band played on scheduled and we hoped the second head would stay intact, which it did, during their performance. I contacted Darrell from the Guitar Center who was there with a booth set up at the Benefit about getting us a new head. Darrell got on the phone right away and had someone bring a new head before the Martini Shot was done playing! To top that off, he didn’t even charge us a dime for the new head! Thanks Darrell! So, when the Shot was done playing we made a very quick kick drum head change before the next band who goes by the name of Thirteen Six. The Thirteen Six band has become a very popular Classic Rock & Roll band here in Pueblo and they rocked the house in a very big way, much to the enjoyment of everyone present, with popular rock & roll tunes. I really liked their version of Hotel California with the matching guitar lead solo’s, another very, very good band! The next band up was the one who started this Homeless benefit back in the early 90’s, that goes by the name of Rumor Hazit. These guys also rocked the house in a big way with more classic rock & roll songs and did a most excellent job. Up next was a crowd favorite that hasn’t played one of our benefits in quite a while, that goes by the name of Gypsy Groove. They did a fantastic job mixing it up with cover and original material along with a song called the Porch Light which is about homeless people and a place to stay at night, which was very fitting for this benefit. Next, was a band called Beloved, which is a Christian Rock band and a crowd favorite as well. They mixed it up with original and popular cover songs that they changed some of the lyrics to get their message across and did a very good job, as usual. A very talented band! Up next, was a blues band that goes by Fat Chance. They mixed it up with original and cover tunes in typical blues fashion and had the most people on the dance floor for the whole weekend. Another very good band with some really great original blues songs that was enjoyed by everyone!
The last band for the night & benefit goes by the name of The Barn Burners. They mixed it up with folk, blues and rock & roll tunes and did an excellent job of closing out our 7th annual Homeless benefit.
A big Thank You goes out to all the PSMA board members and members that helped so much in making this a big success. These shows are a lot of work to put together and to make run smoothly. Yes, we’ve had a lot of practice over the six plus years of doing these type of benefits and it showed in the confidence and ability of the people involved. Everything went very smooth all weekend with no major glitches of any kind, and it was really nice & rewarding for all of us to set a new record breaking effort for this years event. Just think folks, now there’s another new Wal-Mart Super Center in town in Pueblo West. I wonder if we could all three to chip in for next years event to break this years record? It could happen…… we will be working on it for sure. A big Thank You goes out to Jim Carmack and his crew down at The Wayside Cross Gospel Rescue Mission for all the work they do to help the Homeless people of the Pueblo area. The mission is at a record capacity for men and women and he’s still working on ways to help even more. Jim told me again, that we are still the biggest contributor to his mission every year for the last 5 years, which just gives us all involved with this event, a real sense of making a positive difference in this community! It’s a good feeling and something to be proud of!  Another big Thank You goes out to The Wal-Mart Super Centers in Pueblo and all the other sponsoring businesses that supplied door prizes.
Finally, The BIGGEST THANK YOU OF ALL, goes out to all the bands that played, because without you, none of this would be possible!

Until Next Year…..

2007
8th Annual PSMA Homeless Benefit
Hosted by Ray Bolte & Bill Blackburn
@ Zippers, Feb. 16th & 17th

Another year, and here we go again! This years event had a few new twists which were a good thing. Number one was we were at yet another new location, which was Zipper’s Bar & Grill and number two there is another new Wal-Mart in town in Pueblo West, which also matched us! Yep, that’s three Wal-Marts matching the $1,000.00 if we raised a grand as well, which we did again! The total that went this year with all the matching contributions was a little over four thousand five hundred dollars, not to shabby for a couple of days work! As usual, the board did a good job of getting most of the acts booked with a little help from yours truly, and they managed to find people to work the door, thanks in part from the volunteer people of all the Wal-Marts that helped out working the door and helped with the food orders. Zippers did things a little different with the food on this benefit, instead of having the normal serve yourself buffet, they served these wonderful Chicken Hobo lunches to all paying patrons and performing musicians who attended the event, a most excellent idea that everybody enjoyed! A big Thank You goes out to Dan, Tom and the rest of the crew at Zippers for making this a very successful event!

The event started out a little slow on Friday at 6 PM for the first performer who was a fantastic solo acoustic player from Trinidad, Colorado that goes by the name of Jaquie Gipson. Jaquie has been around for some time and a long time member of PSMA with several CD’s out in circulation. She is an instrumentalist on six and twelve string acoustic guitars with a very unique sound that evolves single and double tapping along with effects. It is just amazing to watch her play and everybody in attendance for her performance were just in awe at the incredible talent that this lady possess!  Next up, was a new band that goes by the name of Hot Lunch, a three piece band with acoustic, mandolin and bass served up some tasty old classic rock, blues and original tunes much to the pleasure of the growing audience! They had kind of a unique sound as well with a mandolin doing the majority of the lead rights on some classic rock & roll & blues tunes. Hot Lunch had also just released their first CD, which was on sale at the event. Up next was an acoustic act the goes by the name of The Night Hawk Trio, but they were a duo tonight, with  their fiddle playing member not being able to attend. With an acoustic and up right bass, they performed more on the country kind side of things when it came to their songs which were a mixture of covers and originals. The next band that goes by the name of The Barn Burners who mixed it up with rock & roll and blues, and they were the only band all weekend that had an accordion player. They did an excellent job to the appreciative packed house that was now present.
The next band up goes by the name of Brix, who mixed it up with originals and cover tunes in the good old rock & roll genre, and did a very excellent job, I might ad. Up next, was one of Pueblo’s hot new Rock & Roll bands that goes by the name of Sixteen 61. This four piece band did an awesome job of mixing it up with classic rock & roll and blues tunes, much to the delight of the packed house who was tearing it up on the dance floor, and really digging the music from this most excellent band! The last band for the night, who goes by the name of Thirteen Six. Now this three piece band brought down the house with their classic in your face rock & roll. Without a doubt, one of Pueblo’s best rock & roll bands, and a excellent band to close out our first night of the benefit.
One night down with zero glitches of any kind, and lots of compliments on the sound.
I also need to thank our Co-host, Bill Blackburn, who has been doing all the drawings for the door prizes, and taking care of all the details to make shows like these go smoothly.
Saturday started out at 3 PM with the Goodnight Fellows, a two piece acoustic act featuring two teenage guys performing their own original material to a small but appreciative audience. Up next was a well known rock & roll band that goes by the name of the Full Circle Band. These guys rocked the house with classic rock & roll and blues tunes doing a most excellent job as usual. Next we went back to solo acoustic acts. First featuring Victoria Morningstar, who mixed it up with her original songs and one cover if I remember right. The next solo act was Ed Hill, who also performed his own original material, to a appreciative growing crowd.
Next, we were back to bands for the rest of the night starting out with Gypsy Groove. Now the Gypsy Groove band has been around for some time and has been involved with this benefit from it’s inception, back when Rumor Hazit started it back in the early nineties. To make a long story short, Gypsy Groove rock the house in their normal classic rock & roll fashion mixing it up with covers and originals. Next band up, was another well known blues and jazz band led by Carlos Crull, called the Carlos & Friends Band. The band features Carlos on sax and vocals, with Bobby Montoya on guitar, Tony Ortega on bass guitar and vocals, and Alfred Sanchez on drums. These guys brought the house down again to a very appreciative audience playing classic jazz and blues tunes. A very good band, that we were lucky enough to get to perform at this years event. Next band up, was another well known rock & roll band that goes by the name of Starin @ Karin. They rocked the house in their usual fashion with classic rock & roll tunes, to a packed house! Up next was Sporadic Consistency, another local classic rock band from Pueblo. These guys are heavy rockers, and did not disappoint their fans and the house by tearing it up with many favorite classic rock & roll tunes, including a Pink Floyd song as well. Next band up was supposed to be Rumor Hazit who started this benefit back in the early nineties, but they got a last minute booking and could not attend. I should note, that this was the first time since PSMA has been doing the Homeless Benefit that Rumor Hazit has not played. So instead, Thirteen Six graciously step in and filled the slot and rocked the house in their usual fashion with classic rock songs to a very packed house! The last band for the night was a new band that goes by the name of XL. They were a five piece band featuring a young teenager manning one of the guitars who did  a fantastic job with his father handling the other guitar chores. They mixed it up with classic rock & roll tunes to a very appreciative audience, a very good band to close out this years benefit!

All in all, everything went extremely well with the benefit this weekend with no major snafu's at all, which is a real good thing. It just goes to show with experienced people running the event, good things happen. A big Thank You goes out to the Wal-Marts and their people who helped with the event. A Hugh Thank You to my sister Karen Ward from the north side Wal-Mart who put this all together with the Wal-Mart matching funds in the first place and getting the Pueblo West Wal-Mart added to the list of sponsors for this years event. Also, a big Thank You goes out to all the other businesses that contributed to this years event in the form of door prizes. Another big Thank You goes out tot the board of PSMA for putting this whole event together and organizing everything, which made my job a bunch easier, by just being able to  concentrate on the technical end, which is a lot of work by itself. Finally, the Biggest Thank You of all goes out to all the musicians that donated their time by performing, because without you, none of this would be possible!
